Can I Service My BMW at an Independent Garage Without Affecting My Warranty?
Buying a newer BMW should mean enjoying your car, without worrying about where you’re allowed to have it serviced. Yet many owners assume they must return to a main dealer throughout the warranty period.
The good news is that independent servicing does not automatically invalidate your manufacturer’s warranty. You can choose where your car is serviced, provided the work is carried out appropriately.
CCPC guidance
Choosing a garage is only part of the decision. Your BMW still needs the right maintenance at the right time.
That means following the service requirements for your particular vehicle, using oil and filters that meet the required specifications, and keeping a record of the work completed.
BMW’s published warranty terms state that non-warranty servicing at an independent repairer does not itself affect the vehicle warranty. However, a claim caused by inadequate servicing, repair or unsuitable parts may not be covered. Keeping up with the service schedule and retaining proof of maintenance therefore matters wherever you book.
A prepaid service plan is separate from a warranty, so check whether your next service is already included before paying elsewhere. Extended warranties also have their own claims procedures. Contact the provider before authorising a repair that might be covered.
